Beginning in the 2000-2001 school year, all students will be required to participate in a service program outlined here. Stewardship is a vital role in Christian education. It is an intricate part of putting into practice the teachings of Jesus.

Freshmen and Sophomores will be required to complete fifteen (15) service hours per semester. Seven hours to be completed by the end of the first nine weeks and the remaining by the end of the semester. The students will be required to complete three hours of service at Shawe, five hours of service to their church and seven hours of community service.

Juniors and Seniors will be required to complete twenty (20) service hours per semester. Ten hours are to be completed before the end of the first nine weeks of the first quarter of each semester, and the remaining ten before the end of each semester. The students will be required to complete three hours of service at Shawe, seven hours of service to their church and ten hours of community service.

RELIGION 9
Required: Grade 9
2 Semesters - 2 Credits

Morality--First Semester
The students will be introduced to the ten moral virtues of Christian life and reflect how these virtues apply to their own lives. They will begin to formulate answers to the following questions: What kind of person am I becoming? What kind of person do I want to be? The students will be introduced to a process for moral decision-making.

Sacraments--Second Semester
This course examines symbols, rituals and prayer in the Catholic faith. Students take an in-depth look at the seven sacraments and incorporate the symbols and rituals with each sacrament. Particular emphasis is placed on the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist and Reconciliation. Students also study the history of the liturgy and how it is celebrated in contemporary Catholic communities. Students plan and participate in school liturgies. Each spring, students are invited to participate in the Parish Confirmation program.

Jesus History--Christ of Faith--First Semester
This course is an in-depth study of Jesus as totally divine and human. Students will explore the religious and political world of Jesus and the daily life of the Jewish people. This course outlines the infancy narratives, the "hidden years" of Jesus' childhood, and the beginning of his public life. It continues with a look at the ministry of Jesus, his death and resurrection. Students plan and participate in school liturgies . Each spring, students are invited to participate in the Parish Confirmation program.

Christian Life Choices--Second Semester
The central focus of this course is to explore Christian living, life choices, and sexuality. Students study communication skills that are based on respect, appreciation and support for one another. Personality, sexuality issues and vocational choices are also studied. The text deals with the Catholic interpretation of sexuality.

Social Justice--First Semester
This course relates the teachings of Jesus and his Church to the struggles for justice and peace in our world today. The students will be encouraged to apply their faith to their own lives and the world around them. Students will study four main principles: Holistic, Experiential, Social and Analytic. Students will be provided with many opportunities outside of the regular academic day to take a stand and put into practice the examples of Jesus, for example, to experience a 24-hour fast, to experience what it might be like to be a homeless person for a day, via the "Shanty Town, A Lesson in Human Dignity", and to participate in the Pro-Life March in Washington, DC

Hebrew Scripture--Second Semester
This course will present an overview of the Old Testament. The students will have the opportunity to learn and appreciate the major themes and issues in the Old Testament. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on how biblical truths may be incorporated into their own lives. Developing a deeper understanding of how God has worked in human history and continues to work in the present will also be addressed.

RELIGION 12
Required: Grade 12
2 Semesters - 2 Credits

Senior Religion is designed to give students an opportunity to apply their Catholic faith to their adult lives and decision-making. Students focus on prayer and faith. Students study the different prayers, including the divine office, benediction, and rosary. Traditional prayers will be studied and practiced. These include the Our Father, Hail Mary, Creed, Glory Be, Act of Contrition, and mealtime prayers. The Liturgical Year and the Liturgy will be studied. Students plan prayer services, liturgies, and participate in a service project of their choice.
