ENGLISH 9
Required: Grade 9
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
This course is designed to introduce students to various genres of literature and to encourage students to develop writing skills in an assortment of styles. Students increase vocabulary through exposure to literature in addition to specific vocabulary activities.

ENGLISH 10
Required: Grade 10
Prerequisite: English 9
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
This course reinforces and builds upon concepts mastered in English 9. The course focuses on literature, grammar, composition, and vocabulary.

ENGLISH 11 / AMERICAN STUDIES: LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION
Required: Grade 11
Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10 or Honors English 10
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
The study of literature, historical documents, films, guest speakers, lectures, and research opportunities are tools utilized to enable students to analyze the key political, social, and economic developments in the rise of the United States from the Colonial Era to its position as a world leader. Vocabulary, grammar, and composition exercises are integrated with historical and literary readings and analysis. An individual research assignment on a topic related to the annual National History Day theme that is an integral part of this course. A primary goal of this course is that students will apply their understanding of the evolution of our American society to make informed decisions as active citizens.

HONORS ENGLISH 11
ENGLISH 9 ENGLISH 10, or HONORS ENGLISH 10

ENGLISH 12
Required: Grade 12
Prerequisites: English 9, English 10, and English 11

English 12 is the multidimensional thematic teaching of classical and modern English literature in a format that blends the understanding, appreciation, and analysis of outstanding selected British authors and their works. Concepts are practiced in daily journals, progressive vocabulary development, specialty writing assignments, and cooperative learning projects.

ETYMOLOGY
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
Prerequisites: English 9 or Instructor permission
1 Semester - 1 credit
In this course, students will build a superior vocabulary and learn to utilize it effectively. Students will also master definition and use of words that often appear on standardized tests such as the ISTEP, PSAT, and SAT.

CREATIVE WRITING
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
Prerequisites: English 9
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
Course fee: $20.00
In this course, students are given written assignments that encourage critical thinking skills and offer opportunities to illustrate the understanding of the course concepts. By placing their writings in an 8 1/2 x 11" blank book, students create a record of their thoughts and ideas.

WRITING COMPOSITION
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
2 Semesters - 2 credits
This course focuses on developing students' technical, written communication skills. Proper grammar usage, spelling, punctuation, and sentence and paragraph structure are emphasized.

SPEECH
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
1 Semester - 1 Credit
Class Size Restriction: 15 students
Students will learn verbal and nonverbal skills of effective communication.

SPEECH, ADVANCED
Elective: Grades 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Speech
1 Semester - 1 Credit
This course emphasizes advanced styles of verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

DRAMATIC LITERATURE
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
1 Semester - 1 Credit
Dramatic literature is an advanced level course that takes an in-depth look at William Shakespeare's works and time period. Students will read a variety of his works including songs, sonnets, and an assortment of plays. Students will experience activities such as costume and theatre design in addition to exposure to the cultural significance of the Elizabethan lifestyle that enhances ones appreciation and understanding of Shakespeare's written art.

THEATRE ARTS
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
1 Semester - 1 Credit
This course involves class members in group or individual performance areas such as pantomimes, improvisation, scenes, extemporaneous talks, discussions. Students are expected to participate in the performance of a play.

ADVANCED THEATRE ARTS
Elective: Grade 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Drama I
1 Semester - 1 Credit
This course is an extension of Drama I. Students are assigned additional projects and are expected to perform at an advanced level.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS
Elective: Grades 9 - 12
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
Students gather, write, edit, and publish the news. Based on the cost set by the publishing company, journalism students set a budget and proceed to sell enough advertising to meet their needs. Students acquire a common vocabulary of journalistic terms, decide what sections to include, take pictures, crop photos, select a theme, create a ladder diagram, choose pages for 4-color and spot color, and design the cover. All decisions students make are based on sound journalistic principles and deadline priorities are emphasized and practiced. Requirements: A recommendation from an English teacher. Students who enroll in Journalism I must be a self-starter, able to turn in homework on time, must have a good attendance record in school, must be able to communicate with adults and work as a team member.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS II
Elective: Grades 10 - 12
Prerequisite: Journalism I
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
This course continues the process from Journalism I of gathering, writing, editing, and publishing the news. Aside from having more confidence in selling advertising, Journalism II students assume a leadership role and provide a valuable resource for the success of the journalism program. J II students serve as peer tutors and role models for the J I students.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS III
Elective: Grades 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Journalism I & II
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
This course focuses on an advanced level of gathering, writing, editing, and publishing of the news. Students who possess a working knowledge of print journalism are skilled writers, proficient on the Macintosh computer, able to do a page layout, persistent ad sellers, and exhibit leadership skills. Students provide a service to Shawe Memorial by their dedication and time spent recording a history of the year. Students serve as editor, business manager, and computer editor.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS IV
Elective: Grade 12
Prerequisite: Journalism I, II, and III
2 Semesters - 2 Credits
This course is a culmination of all the Journalism courses. Students are expected to perform journalistic tasks at an advanced level.
