PRINCE OF PEACE PARISH,& SHAWE MEMORIAL JR./ SR. HIGH & POPE JOHN XXIII

This notice contains important information for any volunteers that are involved with Prince of Peace Parish activities, as well as Shawe Memorial Jr./Sr. High School and Pope John Elementary School.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis requires that any volunteer who works with our children MUST participate in a VIRTUS training session. “Protecting God’s Children” (VIRTUS) is an education and awareness program that the archdiocese has implemented for employees and volunteers who work with young people. This is to teach more about child sexual abuse and how to help prevent it. Any organization members are invited to attend along with any parents who might want to volunteer. We are scheduling another date so that you may have the opportunity for this training.  The Archdiocese has stated that in the near future any person who has not had this training will not be eligible to participate in the many and varied volunteer & paid opportunities available in our parish.  Included in this would be, coaches and assistants (paid or volunteer),  field trip supervisors, tutors or regular volunteers at the schools or parish, substitutes, leaders of children groups eg. Scouts, music, twirling, dance, NHS and NJHS, fundraising when working with children, babysitting.  In the future they will continue to be provided and required ”but perhaps not in our own back yard!”  The date for our next local training is:

The following sessions will be held in Seymour:

Saturday, October 18, 9-11:30am    Wednesday, October 29, 6-8:30pm

Please call your primary contact person to register.  There is no fee for the training!

If your time is primarily with preschool, please call Patti Welsh – 273-3957 x291

Protecting God’s Children Program“Virtus”

The Protecting God’s Children awareness session discusses methods for increasing public awareness about the risks associated with child sexual abuse.  It also provides adults with guidance for helping to create and maintain a safe environment for children. The program emphasizes appropriate behaviors with a specific focus on the relationships between adults and children.

The awareness session centers on a discussion of two videos.  The videos are an introduction to the issue of child sexual abuse and are the catalyst for open dialogue between and among the program participants.  The videos feature children and teens who have been abused, as well as perpetrators who described the methods of selecting and controlling victims. Both the videos and discussion are designed to uncover and explain a variety of myths about child sexual abuse-including myths that inaccurately attribute such behavior to homosexuality, the vow of celibacy, and “stranger danger.”  Warning signs of sexual abusers, ways to prevent abuse, responding to allegations, and the proper reporting of suspicions are also discussed.

Please call one of the Prince of Peace campus offices to register. After the training you will be required to read the ongoing awareness bulletins.  The program’s continuing education component helps keep participants up-to-date about the latest prevention means and methods.

 Dear Parents,

Welcome to another great year at Pope John! My name is Anne Higgins and I’m the volunteer coordinator for Box Tops for Education. This year, our goal is to raise $500 for our school.

One of the easiest ways you can make a difference is to sign up for the Box Tops website at boxtops4education.com. It’s easy, free and you’ll learn about new ways to help our school earn the extra cash it needs. This website offers coupons, recipes, and much more!

Box Tops offers easy ways to earn cash for our school through everyday activities like buying groceries, shopping on-line and making purchases with a credit card – all at no additional cost to you.

Clip Box Tops from your favorite brands and send them in to your child's teacher.  Clip Box Tops from hundreds of your family’s favorite products from General Mills, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Ziploc®, Kleenex® and more. Send in the box tops you saved over the summer to your child's teacher.

Shop on-line and earn for our school.  Box Tops has partnered with over 60 of the most popular on-line stores like JCPenney and Lands’ End. Our school earns cash from every qualifying purchase, up to $20,000.

To learn more, visit boxtops4education.com. Thanks for choosing to make a difference for our school with Box Tops and send in those Box Tops your family saved over the summer in soon!
